Bit of a challenge since we can't go bush. Where is this photo (winner gets to go next).

Would you say I made a monumental mistake?
Well, I was very close - The hut is Stoney Creek, very neat - what's it like inside?
The saddle is Monument Saddle, just 6km south of Dismal (I had looked at Dismal initially but passed over it as not eroded enough - wrong).
The 'south of Kingdom of Israel' is Mt Judah (but for Dismal, Temple Peak fitted the clue)
For Dismal, the 1st night hut was Cash Flat (I assume it was Heather Jock?)
But, what is the track in the valley? Can't see any marked on the topo.
Well done @bernieq. Yes - the saddle was Monument saddle. Looking down into Stony Creek in the first pic, across the Wild Spurs on the second pic, and back down Wallers Creek (past the snow-covered Mt Alaska with Mt Judah peeking over the spur in the photo centre).
The trip was a Heather Jock, Stony Creek, Cash's Flat loop via Monument and Dismal saddles.
Can't recall much about Stony Creek Hut - 2 bunks and surrounded by sandflies! Good spot on a nice riverside flat in beech though, and very little used.

I thought the geologists would be all over this one - perhaps there aren't any playing along?
This very low silica metamorphic rock only occurs in a few places in NZ - the colour is quite distinctive.
Well - I'd been assuming the red rock was just volcanic core stuff - which narrowed it down a bit but not much. But from your hint, it sounds more like you're talking ultramafic rock - which narrows it down a lot. 2 big areas at Red Hill and Red Hills, and about 5 small areas which the only one I can recall is Sleepy Hollow.
Fairly sure it's not at Sleepy Hollow or Red Hill (Richmond Ra), so guess the leaves Red Hills and the other smaller sites.
Does the 5 passes make it far enough west to get into Ultramafics?

Yes, it's ultramafic and yes, it reaches into the 5 Passes route. You're not lost this time (ie not on the wrong track :)

If it is 5 Passes and that colour would have to be Fiery Col, though I don't specifically remember it...

BTW, there is only one thing worse than getting older .... *not* getting older - enjoy it while you can.

It is a boat where a boat should not be (or is at least very hard to get a boat to).
Name the water body or track we are at the start of.
Think this may either be really obvious to those who have been there or more difficult due to the lack of topography.

Well, I'm finding it pretty tricky.
I'm thinking along these lines :
Hard to get a boat there so no road access (or a very rough one). But, it's the start of a track - without road access? Must have flown in?
And 'name the body of water' - why not 'name that lake'? because it's not a lake? So it's an inlet/cove/bay - maybe. Or could be a lagoon/pool/dam?
