all those walking over the slip obviously havnt seen what isnt under there feet
The problem area is the part of the slip with vegitation still on it and the section closest to the forks (left of the picture). The area that has already had some remedial work started on it (right) has only been losing some fine gravel over the last couple of weeks. The section that is still raw is dropping quite a lot of larger debris
65 mm of rain here in the last 48 hrs should have washed most loose debris off the face. I will cycle up to the slip for a look when the rain stops
Next Day (19th feb)
As noted above the area that has already had work done on it has dropped very little new debris but below the area to the east there has been a lot of new rockfall some quite large. The ledge that the road sits on seems secure all the way across. I also checked out the start of the new track that starts at the Stone Walls Reserve and climbs around the slip. It appears to go much higher than the slip itself and then joins the old access track that leads to the abandoned hydro scheme and drops back to the road just above the Roaring Meg bridge. I hope to walk the new track tomorrow and will post my impressions . Unfortunately I don't own a GPS so can't post any waypoints
Next Day (20th Feb)
Last night the whole centre section of the slip came down and there is definitely not even any foot access across now.
I followed DOCs new "Emergency Access Track" and found that it is really a well marked route not a track. Very steep climb from the road to the high point via an old logging road which took me 30 min with a small day pack and then about the same time down through open bush to join the road near the Roaring Meg. The bush section is also very steep and slippery. DOC advise 2 to 2.5 hours from the Stone Walls car park to the forks and I think that would be about right with a weekend pack.
The only good news is that the section of slip that has come down was the part that caused the contractor to stop work some time ago when he found large cracks in the ground above where he was working
if you have a smart phone you can use an app like strava and record the gps track and you create an account on their website https://www.strava.com then you can post the track you took or get the gpx file off it and post that
@waynowski. No smart phone, no GPS, no breathable parka. Old school
sextant? :)
Thanks for the updates, @mantis.
note Mantis's man on the ground up to date notes on the state of the slip above.
