Otaki Forks access road closed for summer

This will ruin some plans this summer. Mine included.
I wonder how the on-foot risk of crossing that region of the road compares with typical risks that many people take whilst tramping.
It will increase the load on all the other access points too
Is it possible to cross the Otaki and head up the true right at that point?
As izogi implies, it would be a massive disruption to the entire Tararua track and hut system if the Otaki road end was permanently closed off.

Well there goes the starting point for the New Years tramp. Will have to enter from holdsworth meaning two more big bloody climbs.
why isnt an alternate foot track cut past the slip, instead of a stock standard "the road is closed" response? given its summer and a lot of trampers will be looking to get to the forks. mind you theres nothing to stop anyone willing to bush bash around the slip.
Hitched back to Otaki from the forks once with an old fella and he told me it used to be the normal to park before the slip and start a tramp to field hut. Would add a great deal of time to a tramp basically just to get to the forks.
God just reminded me of the new track to waitewaewae. It is the pits.
