Things I have learnt!
One subject/lesson/paragraph per post - keep it short, things you have learnt, 1 liners of experience. Lest see if we can get a wonderful post of epithets going. I'll start:

Tea brewed at altitude tastes better
Seeming Lisa has brought up sexy. If you go tramping long enough, women in polar fleece look sexy.
As do men in tights!
Children will eat veges after a seven hour tramp. In fact they will pretty much eat anything....
Your teenage son will eat all the food on the first day if you don't keep an eye on him.

Food: it may not look appetising or taste good at home, but when in the bush its always amazing!
Raid (fly spray): take it. it may look bulky, your friends may laugh at you, fellow trampers may even laugh at you, but you will have the last laugh when your tent/hut/4wd is mozzie free!
if your young, DOC will try and talk you out of any tramp you have planned (unless its a great walk in the middle of summer)...
Take lots of photos, even if you don't feel like it. Take photos of the people you are with and the huts you stay at.
