Norovirus heads north

1–10 of 22

You don't have to be on a cruise ship to get Norovirus. Just visit one of the more populated huts this summer... Unconfirmed reports today on FB of Norovirus-like symptoms appearing at Salisbury, Granity Pass and Gridiron rock shelters. Will create quite a mess if it reaches Abel Tasman NP! Infected people just should not be anywhere near communal kitchens as this is the prime place to catch it. Or have bad toilet hygiene. If heading into the Kahurangi NP, be on your guard and take what measures you need to, to have a safe and sick-free trip.
Whoa ! Saw an earlier warning about it on the Travers-Sabine loop (Nelson Lakes).
Definitely taking the tent on the Travers Sabine now!

Totaranui succumbs... http://www.stuff.co.nz/nelson-mail/news/88230383/campers-fall-ill-at-popular-totaranui-campground-in-golden-bay
""People with norovirus illness are contagious from the moment they begin feeling sick and for the first few days after they recover. Some people may be contagious for even longer."" https://www.cdc.gov/features/norovirus/ Some people are infected without showing symptoms at all. Seriously, DoC are advising people to tent away from some huts.
Over the New Year we were at a festival near Rangiora where the bug hit big time. Many succumbed to it but many of us didn't, my wife and I were amongst the lucky ones. My cousin, who was camped right next to us, went down. All participants were sharing food, toilets etc. and there was much hugging yet many of us didn't get it - weird! A big Facebook discussion then took place where many theories were put out but, even though a doctor and nurses who were present joined in, nobody could come up with the method of transmission or reasons why some did not get it. Maybe it was just luck? Meanwhile I just picked up a cold yet my wife has not got it. Similar I guess?
differing immune system strength, possible previous exposure to the bug
Google how many times a person touches their face each day: 2000-3000 times.... Try and spend a day and not touch your face. You won't believe how difficult it is to stop the habit. Takes discipline till it becomes second nature. People in the health industry do it without thinking but the general public don't. That's one way of transmission, the other is eating contaminated food. Prepare your own on clean surfaces etc or eat packaged food or hot food. It's possible not to catch the virus but boy you have to be vigilant and have your wits about you and who is during the holidays?
Oh no, we're all set to do Travers Sabine in about 2 weeks with my 13yo son. We just finished Routeburn and Kepler a week ago without any problem. I really don't want to postpone our plan but i'm worried about the virus.
