Some more info from one of my other neighbors from Monday.
"There was quite an explosion on the slip face last night at about 5.45pm. I think the rock under the last surviving piece of original road (which had the concrete bollard alongside it) went. All I could think of were all the people who had tiki-toured the slip over the weekend, walking out on it and some rolling boulders off the edge - if only they knew how unstable it is!"
Will be heading up to Otaki today.
Not part of the plan by any chance. If its unstable they mat of blown it up
if they were going to blow it up there would have been notices around for africa, they should have notified the locals and there should have been public notices, doing it at the end of the working day isnt a normal time to fire explosives
Either way it still sounds like it will be closed for summer.
Dont plan your xmas bbq there
Diggers still working there today But I was on the wrong side of the valley to see what has happened
Added a photo of the lower slip from the 20th March and one from 28th April to the photo gallery page, looks like a fair amount of the lower slip went down to the river, starting to look more like a blue bluff rather than a brown one.
Appreciate the ongoing updates on the blue slip @Andrewm and @mantis
Update 13/05/2016.
Contracters have been working seven days a week for the last fortnight and now have 2 diggers a bulldozer and a couple of huge trucks similar to those used in open cast mines. They seem to be making good progress working their way down from the top. I have not been able to get very close due to the amount of work going on but have posted a pic taken today in "photos" on this site
I will be up a my place tomorrow, will post some updated photos from the North side of the river on Sunday.
Posted a couple of pics of the clearance work in the "photos"site.
