Kaimai-Mamaku

Hi looking for suitable tramps around the kaimai-Mamaku forest for myself and 7 year old son with over night stopout (tent or Hut)anyone got any good ideas cheers Karl
Walk in to Waitawheta hut. a great place to start. level walk up the river with a nice big hut at the end. an easy 3 to 4 hour walk and a good start to a kids tramping career. You will find photos and discriptions on this site.
There a lot of good walks to choose from, best to get the latest park map. I have not seen it yet, I have heard it has all the huts marked now. The Dean Track Loop to Daley's Clearing Hut is a good one, and has no river crossings. Can get a bit cold in the winter. Dean Track Info: http://www.tramper.co.nz/?3588
Hi 1974kai, the Waitewheta Hut (as above) from Franklin Rd was the first tramp I ever did at 17. Very easy and it apparantly has a new hut. It got me hooked!
cheers guys we will give it ago next month
hey there im new to tramping and new zealand but really keen to get out there asap and was after some info on the puketutu hut.i walked to the falls one day then realised the other day that there is a track that leads on to the hut and was going to make an over night trip of it.but didnt want to take a wrong turn anywhere so if anyone out ther has gps co ords of the hut or can give a detailed description of the track starting at the carpark of wairere falls it would be muchly appreciated.i was thinking of doing it in the next few weeks too so what temps should i be expecting up there?
This time of year it will be cold, and the stove needs to be stoked every hour or so. I was there 6 weeks ago, you will need a good sleeping bag. I would recommend Karuitatahi Hut for an overnight, in from uplands road near Katikati. Links on this site for Puketutu. http://www.tramper.co.nz/?3408 http://www.tramper.co.nz/?3173

Haqii has a route description here http://www.tramper.co.nz/?3173 details of the hut are at http://www.tramper.co.nz/?3168 and coordinates in any format you want at http://www.tramper.co.nz/?view=points&id=3168 From memory, I think if you continue up the stream from the top of the Wairere Falls you will meet the North South track in about 30mins - 1 hr. From there go north and Haqii's instructions should kick in at the mock grave site.
Jeez! Haqii is quick, beat me to the trigger. I also suggest getting a copy of the new Kaimai-Mamaku park map available from DOC if you are interested in that area. Just make sure you get the 2009 edition and don't let them try and palm the 2002 edition on you, like Tourism Rotorua tried to do to me. It has quite a bit more detail about land tenure and tracks than the LINZ topos.
