Has anyone come across a memorial stone placed somewhere in the Kawekas? I would like to find it.
Do you mean the memorial cairn up on the Kaweka J? Built by the Heretaunga TC as a memorial to members lost in WW2. Has a plaque on it. Over the years rocks have been added to it by trampers so it is very large.
Thanks for your response. I know the Kaweka J Memorial Cain and it's not the one I'm looking for. It's a small private memorial stone, actually that's about all I know of it and that it's in the Kaweka ranges somewhere.
Have you tried contacting someone from the Napier or Heretaunga Tramping Clubs? Someone there is sure to know.
Has anyone seen the the little memorial plaque on Ngauruhoe Summit? From memory some of the words are written in ?Japanese. We could start 'memorial bagging'!!
There is one on Ruapehu I believe at NZTM 1818539 5652328. It is called the Stanton Memorial. I haven't been to it but I remember someone telling me about it and giving me the coordinates. I hadn't thought much about it until now.
The Stanton memorial plaque is on a large rock on a bluff at the head of the Whakapapaiti Valley and commemorates the death of a young tramper in 1931.
The one I'm looking for is only a few years old. But that would be an interesting one to find. I will enter it in my GPS. I might start 'memorial bagging' now, (thanks furitbat), although the risk of it being in the same category as train spotting is fairly high.
