sorry, yeah the Nz series... totally mindless behaviour all for the sake of some more dramatic footage of seals making a beeline for the sea. bear grylls mentality TV. the guy isnt a conservationist at all. I did a seal swim with an authorised company in Abel Tasman. we were fully briefed beforehand, we could swim parallel to the island where we were put in the water but we were not to go within 25 metres of land or seals that werent coming towards us... the seals would come up close anyway in the water, but we were told in that case we were not to go onto land where the seals were. cant remember if it was on a kayak trip but somewhere i've been told dont come between a seal and the sea along a coastline, they are very skittish on land but confident in the sea... standing upright above a seal on land is threatening to them... I"ve had no response yet from the office, if i don't get one , I may write to the minister. i hope they dont play that in too many countries, sets completely the wrong impression of how to treat seals... the seals there come under enough stress from massive no's of people, oaties and kayakers
speaking of seals, heres a leopard seal in Abel Tasman Leopard seals have killed people.. http://www.stuff.co.nz/travel/travel-troubles/80016905/tourists-close-encounter-with-leopard-seal
Well, I've had a response with thanks and saying it's been referred to the Marine Compliance team to assess the footage and determine if any action is appropriate. I'm not sure what else can be done.
i emailed the regional office, did you email them or the visitor centre?
I went to the DOC's Contact page, clicked the General Enquiry link to reach http://doc.govt.nz/footer-links/feedback/general-enquiry-form/ , then filled in the form with the Location field set to Nelson/Tasman. In the submission I specified the show's title and episode number, noted it'd recently shown on Choice TV, provided a link to where it could be viewed online, stated that the suspect part was 37 minutes in, and explained what I thought it was, and that it reportedly occurred in the vicinity of Whariwharangi Bay or along that coast. The initial acknowledgement was 90 minutes later from someone in the enquiries team, who said they'd forwarded it to someone who could respond. About an hour after that I received a response from someone in the Media Advice group, saying it was being forwarded to the Marine compliance team to assess the footage. I don't know where it'll go from there.
Thumbs up to you both.
