If its near the old Tauherinikau Hut site then its probably the remains of Joe Gibbs orchard. Joe had quite a few fruit trees and veges planted just upstream from Tauherinikau hut and had a large frame with chicken wire to protect them from the possums. He stayed for long periods at the hut in the 1960's (I met him about 1966 when he was over 80)
it is Joe Gibbs orchard/garden. His own bush hut remains are around there somewhere, I gather
