RE: Penn Creek Track - Tararuas?
The track from Penn Creek to Otaki Forks has been washed out and unusable for years. There are 2 options. One is to return via Tabletop and the first bit of the climb is "fun" The second is to follow Penn Creek down to the Otaki River then follow the river down. This is strictly a fine warm weather trip only. It involves lots of swimming. (try 6 hour trip 4 of which is in the water) You need dry bags for your gear,Clothing that is warm in and out of water. and a competent group and be willing to abandon this way should conditions not be perfect
Some people do this on tubes There is only a couple of slightly tricky bits for tubing but there is also some very long slow pools as well.
A group from the TTC followed the Penn Creek route in 2007, doing the loop as a long daywalk, and wrote about it at http://www.ttc.org.nz/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/TripReports/2007-09-22-PennCreekRevisited
It sounds do-able with lots of caution, skill and readiness to turn back, but had some scary sections and definitely not for beginners.
