Portable wind speed measurement

Does anyone have any experience with gauging wind speed reasonably accurately? For me it's mostly just a curiousity, as I'd like to be able to measure what I actually experience in certain places when I visit them, compare what I measure with forecasts, and so on. With a speedy web search I stumbled on this portable Anemometer device off a random bargain website, which I'm guessing is just a represenative device for what the market offers: http://www.its-a-steal.co.nz/Harley-Wind-Speed-Meter-.htm Does anyone have any experience playing with this type of thing in a tramping context? Is there anything that's especially good compared with alternatives?
I note the device you have a link for can be found on you tube, alternately you my wish to have a look at http://www.supercheapauto.co.nz/online-store/products/SCA-Anemometer.aspx?pid=339336#Cross or http://www.scientificsales.co.nz/weather-stations/portable.html interesting little devices.
Thanks. I've come across an early Christmas prezzie card, so I'm tempted to pick one and buy it, just to see what I get. It's a shame that they're not specced much on weight as a marketing point.
On a second look at some of these specifications, at least several of the hand-held Anemometers only seem to be rated to around 107km/h. Maybe I'm overly optimistic, but one of the scenarios that's interested me is to try and measure wind that's been forecast as high as or higher than that (or approaching those places), so now I'm having second thoughts. Hmmmm.
Could you hold your hand above head long enough to get a reading in stronger winds than that?
Possibly not but I'm not certain. I guess it could be comparable with holding an arm out a car window when travelling fast. I've been to places with winds forecast as being that high but with no objective way of finding out what I was actually experiencing, which is sort of what I'd like to know regarding how likely those forecasts are accurate for the specific places, compared with what it actually feels like in winds of different strengths. Problem is that if it *might* be that strong and the device isn't rated for that strong, then whatever number it produces wouldn't be trustworthy anyway. I'm still tempted to get one just ot of interest, even just for lower wind. They're not as expensive as I'd thought they might be (maybe that's the problem) and it'll keep me occupied for a few hours before getting lost in a drawer. :)
We used a wind speed device when I was doing volunteer work in Mongolia. It looked similar to the Harley wind speed meter on your link. I don't think we measured anything much over 20m/s. It did temp and windchill temp too, we got down to 0.4 degrees (and up to 35) and -13 degrees with windchill. Was very interesting - I have no idea what the accuracy is like though.
Don't know what it weighed but it was very light. Maybe similar to a compass? (We wore them round our neck). Felt more like a piece of plastic than anything containing electronics
i got the supercheap auto one... 50 grams while the windspeed measured goes to 90k's it also has a beaufort scle on it right up to twelve , i havent used it to its max speed , it may actually go higher if its capable of measuring the beaufort scale right up to force twelve. it just may be its not accurate enough to give an exact speed...
Thanks. There aren't any Supercheap Auto stores outside of Auckland (guess I could have mail-ordered). In the end, yesterday, I ordered one of FishPond, but at this point (shipping from the USA) it probably won't arrive until next year. http://www.fishpond.co.nz/Sports_Outdoors/Vktech-Digital-Wind-Speed-Scale-Gauge-Metre-Anemometer-NTC-Thermometer-Metre-GM8908/0700358170096 It looks like the same one I've seen advertised in lots of places, but Fishpond's retail was by far the cheapest. In some ways it'd be kind'a cool to have an anemometer which speaks ANT+, to be able to broadcast readings real-time to a GPS (like an eTrex 30) for recording in a GPX file. Maybe not too practical if it's constantly necessary to be holding it up in the right orientation whilst on the move, though.
