Track recommendations

Hi, I know that this may seem like a very general question, but I would really appreciate some ideas for hikes that would really show off NZ and its mountains. I've been browsing through the track database and there seem to be so many great routes to choose from and we will only have 1 month in NZ and wish to see as much of it as possible. Some key info: 1. Me and my wife are both experienced in hiking in various terrain, including highly exposed, difficult areas. 2. We are both fit and have no problems with altitude, long ascents, descents etc. 3. We have crampons and all sorts of gear that would be necessary for NZ conditions (snow, etc.) 4. Will be in NZ from 19 Feb to mid-March Like I stated at the beginning, I am aware of the fact that answers to such a question are highly subjective, but would really appreciate it if you could just write some of your "must-see/walk" tracks. Thanks in advance, Martin

Hi, Thanks for the suggestions, we're still working out the exact itinerary. Fiordland is definitely something we want to see, as well as Rees Dart and some place where we can see Mt. Cook. I've also been thinking of a quick trip to Tahurangi (our flight is to Auckland, so it seems logical to do something on the North island). I am familiar with the Australian biosecurity thing (was not when coming in actually, but I always keep my gear clean), so if this is not so very much different, I will be ok. Thanks for the heads up though. By the way, if you ever need info on any tracks in Poland, some other countries in Europe, Reunion, or China (and some other places), you are welcome to ask. Thanks again, Martin
Martin, I am likely to have some ?'s on routes on Reunion some time soon. Thanks
tahurangi is three hundred miles from auckland...
Rees Dart is even further, but that is not going to stop me from going there. We're coming all the way from Europe to NZ, so 300 miles is hardly a lot compared to that:) I am aware of some of the distances and am trying to devise the best itinerary. Regarding Tahurangi - I was browsing through some photos and liked what I saw. Aardvark - PM me if you need any info. For a good topo map > http://www.geoportail.gouv.fr/accueil navigate to Reunion on the small "world map" and choose "Cartes (IGN)" [or any other type of map that you might like].
rees dart is just an hours drive from a major airport. tahurangi isnt

Ok... Well, we'll see. Still, it's not as if it's erupting and there is no actual prohibition on going there :) If it's a "do it at your own risk", I'll keep checking for updates and, if nothing major happens, go and see for myself. Thanks for the info though, definitely something to keep in mind (like a backup plan, if it's not possible to go up Tahurangi).
mr walkingeverywhere you're an idiot, it could erupt any time, in recent years one chap had an erupted boulder take his leg off, if you are near the crater you're putting your life and the lives of the people who will have to rescue you at risk, DOC are advising people not to go within the exclusion zone and pretty much everyone is doing that. we dont need people like you in our country, we have to rescue enough risk taking inexperienced people in the hills as it is costing us money, please go and find somewhere else to do your risk taking,
SAFETY FIRST ALWAYS... trip plans are goals they arent targets, expect to abandon your trip goal in the face of dangers such as imminent volcanic eruptions in the meaintime heres some pictures for your enjoyment https://www.google.co.nz/search?q=ruapehu+eruption&hl=en&tbo=u&tbm=isch&source=univ&sa=X&ei=FiOxUKb8F4ObjALvvoHYCQ&ved=0CEsQsAQ&biw=1517&bih=756
