FMC Conference Summary

I was there and so was iangeorge. It was a great conference. I came home with a mixture of pessimism and optimism. Pessimism in the views put up by supporters of the current Govt and DOC itself, that the conservation estate has to help pay for itself through more consessions and commercial activities. And optimism in some of the more visionary ideals displayed by other speakers. I just chuckled a bit about the 1% to conservation by Patagonia. Patagonia is a company founded by Yvon Chounard that has pledged 1% of its sales for the planet. Yeah. To be fair she was either quoting Kevin Hague (or possibly misunderstanding him). If you scroll to the comments where it's been pointed out, she's a little annoyed at herself for not picking it up.

Actually it was Rob Brown who was proposing the 1%. I think Kevin must have picked up on it somewhere as well.

Off-topic but Frank bought some Patagonia brand trekking shoes, full of high hopes. They were expensive and the worst ever for rapid wear and tear. Just about immediate.
