Less tracks in the 2011 budget

In reply to John Saunders' post at http://tramper.co.nz/?view=topic&id=1428&messageid=9989#message9989 John wrote: "I notice in Budget 2011 that DOC had 9,554 kilometres of track that met the required service standard in 2010/11, and that falls to 8,565 kilometres in 2011/12. A substantial drop. Is this more 'wilderness experience' due to submissions on management plans, as some would want us to believe, or simply no cash from this Government for track maintenance?" It could also be an upping of the required standard, whatever that is, but somehow I don't think so. Maybe it's worthy of an OIA request to DoC or the Minister of Conservation.
What is "service standard" If it means that some of the current gravel paths will degrade back to mud tracks then its not a big deal. If it means they will degrade into impenetrable scrub then it is. I suspect Doc will just forget the existence of several tracks so option 2 wins

NZ Standards have a standard for tracks in NZ. It is quite comprevensive and I am sure DOC could tell you exactly how many metres of track in NZ meet the different standards. You can purchase a copy of this for $188 or $169 for a pdf. I got a copy through the Public Library. This document takes up 2 pages to describe an orange triangle by the way. Yes, be prepared for non touristically inclined tracks to be neglected from here on. We have lost our patron saint of tramping and are now on our own. We all need to do our little bit to keep the tracks open and the huts in good heart. There are some very light secateurs, loppers and pruning saws around these days. Some of them have very effective rachet mechanisms as well. Thanks to all those who do this e.g. Andrew Barker and Glenn Johnston to name a couple of you.
