Dragons Teeth

Hi there, a friend (who hasn't done the Dragons Teeth!) says that ropes are needed to do the route - is that correct? can anyone give me some info about the tramp? Cheers Chris
I believe there used to be fixed ropes and they were removed because they were unsafe. If you actually want to traverse the Dragon's Teeth themselves then I believe it is better to do them from Adelade Tarn to Lonely Lake because then you are climbing rather than descending the difficult sections. However most people avoid the whole difficult bit by dropping down into the headwaters of the Anatoki River. This make a very long day but you can resolve that by simply spliting the day in two. You can see a mock up of my GPS track on http://www.giscover.com/tours/tour/display/1343 We did not complete the trip because we got rained out and my GPS got drowned in the river... Bugger!
great, thanks for that. I use compass rather than GPS, but it looks like a useful tool!
Have a great trip
Frank analysed the Lonely Lake and Adelaide Tarn hut book entries and computed that only one in three parties who plan to travel from from Lonely Lake to Adelaide Tarn via the low route actually get there via that route. Quite a few bail out and go out via the Stanley River. The high route is much more challenging terrain-wise and there are combinations of the high route and lower routes as well. The trick with the low route when going south to north is to stick to the headwaters as long as possible before crossing to the true right at E2471569 N6028309. When we did it, there were cairns. It's a big mistake to leave the stream too early. Then you will encounter scrub. I think Paul Kilgour is the local expert for the region.
DOC have a route guide for the low route/ route to Anatoki Forks. One other way which would also be a possibility is to travel to Anatoki Forks then up to Adelaide Tarn from there....got the Cobb to Anatoki on my website..pictures coming soon.
oh yeah a relative of mine did it in 1972 and would never do it again! I certainly would not try climb over them after looking at them form both sides!!
Anatoki Forks Hut has a hot shower too http://www.tramper.co.nz/?2265
