Kaweka`s

Hey all im planning on going up to the kawekas on the 31st of july for a night or 2 and was wondering if any one knows what makahu saddle would be like? Snow? and if any one has any other ideas of a good decent over night trip up there? Cheers jono
Yes there will be snow in the area especially on top of kaweka maybe not at Makahu saddle hut but it wil be cold. There are a number of good walks on this site if you search Kaweka
Waist deep snow up there a week or two ago got the pics up on the website. Also took a video of it snowing. No doubt being winter there will be snow about the road might even be closed. Manson Hut/Otutu Huts are the most exciting places in the Kawekas possibly even Tussock/Harkness Hut but there probably more than a overnight trip. IT is possibly to get into MAnson Hut from Kuiripapango but would be hard to do if there is deep snow about. Studholme Saddle or Back Ridge or Ballard are huts you might want to keep in mind to visit.
Hey all i`m going up to the Kaweka`s next weekend into Makino hut then wander down to Te Puia lodge via mangatainoka hot springs were I may camp, has anyone been up there lately with snow being around or is it not to bad? Will be taking a rifle so wouldn`t mind if we can hunt while walking which will be made abit harder if waist deep snow, any info would be greatly appreciated or if any one would like to join. Cheers jono
Keep the rifle handy on the way in plenty of deer on the road leave the rifle behind and take a rod the mohaka is full of very big trout. With all the rain there shouldnt be any snow.
