Mt Richardson to Lees

HI. Looking at the route/track down into the Lees Valley from mt Richardson. DOC say call the cocky for permission. But unfortunately they never answer the phone or Doc have the wrong number published. Has anyone tried the legal road that this track almost follows? Is it possible. Looks ok until it joins the streambed but hard to tell from airphotos what the scrub in Dorman Stream is like. Was possibly a discussion of this here, but not enough landmarks mentioned to be sure. https://tramper.nz/?view=topic&id=8639&messageid=53193#message53193 Location: http://mapspast.org.nz/?zoom=13&x=1537937&y=5221452&layerid=NZTM%20Topo%202009
I'm not sure if this land is owned by that corporation mentioned in the thread. I posted the email address but it was removed. You can find it on this web page; https://www.grasslands-llc.com/lees-valley-station--new-zealand for the parent organisation but for Lees Valley specifically it is themuster(at)grasslands-llc.com They like a week's notice but we'll never be that organised! Now according to the law, it is not illegal to be on a cockie's land. It is only illegal if you've been trespassed so if a cockie encounters you on his land all he can do is trepass you. If he wishes to do it via a trespass notice from the police, he has to know your name. So it is illegal for you not to leave his property when told to leave but not illegal for you to be there otherwise. The law of trespass historically came about in New Zealand to protect a farmer from illegal hunting on his property, in particular repeated hunting as opposed to a single event. Of course they don't want you interfering with their crops, fences and gates and stock either e.g. mismothering. Personally I can live with myself if the land is destocked (as Winterslow always was in the winter) and I'm not damaging fences in transit. Especially if I act as a pair of eyes and ears for stock in trouble i.e. from tutu poisoning or prolapsed ewes. Or I clean up their mouse-shit infested musterers huts.
Cheers @Honara. That's the landowner. Have you ever got permission off them? DOC didn't seem too optimistic about my chances.
@madpom: I'm not very good at bothering to ask for permission. I think I've done this about 3x! The only time I was refused was from Jim Ward - mustering he claimed. Yeah right. So the next time we asked DoC to ask and voila! From what I've heard I understood Grasslands were easy-going on permissions but I guess it's where. The hunting thing might be an issue. I think the dude that owns the land where the old track went up to Ladbrook Hill from the Ashley Gorge Rd is not keen for people to muck up hunting opportunities for his pals. Just as well the DoC land is round the corner. Frank and I started to cut a track up there to help guide people down into the DoC estate but we have only done a few minutes of the top of the track where it starts to leave the old track. It's the bottom bit that needs to be formed into a track but it's bloody steep!
