Overnight tramps by public transport

Hi everyone and happy new year! I'm a Brit over here in NZ for a few weeks. I'd like to do a couple overnight tramps but am mainly relying on public transport. Can you recommend any? I'm looking around either: Queenstown Mount Cook Auckland Northland Coromandel I can camp or use huts though am aware many huts are already booked up (eg mueller). Just one night tramps are ideal (limited time sadly). I've already done the Queen Charlotte Track. I may have access to a car in Auckland but guess i would have the problem of getting back to it at the end of the tramp... Your local knowledge and expertise would be much appreciated! Sarah
auckland theres public transport to and from the Hillary trail find a bus on the auckland traffic website to get near to teh arataki visitor centre, train goes to swanson at the northern end theres a shuttle bus that goes to piha, the surf shuttle http://regionalparks.aucklandcouncil.govt.nz/hillary-trail/map for the coromandel, find public transport to thames, check intercity bus service and there are walking tracks from the town queenstown theres a track & info bus service that will take you to a number of different tracks, some tracks require booking on the tracks.
Arthur's Pass National Park is easily accessed from Christchurch by the Greymouth bus. Mt Taranaki (I think there's a shuttle from New Plymouth, or else main bus routes get you to Stratford). Tongariro National Park (either alight at Whakapapa or, if you ask nicely beforehand, the drivers will usually let you off between stops, something that holds on most routes and you can often arrange pick ups between stops too).
