tent advice
Hi,
I am in the market for a mid-range tent - do not know much about tents and cannot decide on two options - can anyone please help?
I am wondering which of these two tents would be better option:
1. Bora 2 Person Tent v2 ($269.98)

I got a barely used sub-800 gram near-bombproof tarptent on backpackinglight.com for less than what the OP is looking at spending. Even new some of them are only mid range cost.
The fact that they are cottage industry and are built/tweaked by mad keen hikers keeps prices down and keeps the designs rich with the most useful features.
tarps are of limited use if you have a lot of biting insects around
Oh no, misunderstanding "tarptent" aren't tarps, they're tents (most of them, like mine, are double wall, though they can be pitched without the inner if it's not needed, which obviously slashes your weight penalty for the trip). Tarptent is just the name of the company, if you can use that word for an operation run out of one guy's garage (although it's a very highly respected operation in the US lightweight hiking community.)

tarptents tend to use mesh inner, if you want a tent that is good for cold weather , you won't go for a tarptent, you'll go for a tent with a woven inner tent fabric..
There are so many tradeoffs when it comes to selecting a tent... I just felt that the OP (who professed just an entry level awareness of it all) should know that there are ways of getting it done that don't involve lugging around something that takes up half your pack space and costs you a multi kg weight penalty.
all good, as long as he realises the pluses and minuses of the various options, problem is when you can only afford one tent you need to make sure the tent is going to cover you for the conditions you'll need it for
