Kaimai-Mamaku Ranges

October Track Report. http://www.doc.govt.nz/upload/documents/parks-and-recreation/plan-and-prepare/tauranga-track-report.pdf
Looking at finishing the North-South track going in from SH 29 and finishing at Thompson's Track. Anyone done this recently? Should we stick to the new N-S track or is the old one ok? In particular, what is the old N-S track from Mangaputa Stream to Te Tuhi track junction like. Do we need 2 or 3 nights?
Ive heard that the old track is very overgrowen and hard to follow (not maintained). You can give DOC Tauranga a call for up to date info.
Ive heard that section has been recently cleared fruitbat, but not been through myself yet. However, was at Mangamuka Hut a couple of weeks ago, and discovered a very recently signposted and marked track leading in from the Te Tuhi Track. Looked as if the track from the hut to the Ngamuwahine Stream, on your route, may also have had a makeover.Might give you a well placed overnight stop. Lovely hut with 4 bunks.
The track to Mangamuka hut, and also the maintenence on the hut was done by the Tauranga Deer Stalkers club, not DOC.
The Old North South has been recut and marked I was through there last weekend. I did a loop from the Leyland OBrien down the North / South into Mangamuka Hut and out via TeTuhi to Whaka (Blade) good walk no animals seen and very warm..
I did SH 29 to Thompson's track mid last year and stayed in huts each night. The last really overgrown part from Hendersons Track through to Te Tuhi track had just been cut back making for a fast and enjoyable trip.
A DOC brochure to download with a lot of good info about the Kaimais and surrounding area. http://www.doc.govt.nz/upload/documents/parks-and-recreation/tracks-and-walks/bay-of-plenty/kaimai-to-coast-brochure.pdf
