RTM Ruapehu in winter

1–10 of 14

Has anyone done this? Any areas of heightened hazard? Avalanche paths? Etc, etc.
at the altitude it runs the snow if its around at the time is often soft or the ground gets slushy and its hard going... theres a lot of up and down in it which adds to the difficulty.
From NZ Herald today - "The avalanche.net.nz forecasting service reported a "considerable" avalanche risk in many mountain areas yesterday, including much of Ruapehu and at Mt Hutt in Canterbury."
Ive done it, winter 98, but you will have to pm me if you want advice. I don't mind helping you out though @craig so feel free bro
avalanche risks will go up and down like a yoyo according to when the last snow dump was... its all below 1500m, at the level of the track the snow level goes up and down as it falls and melts.. its usually outside of the avalanche risk area, prob one of the reasons the track goes where it does. this year has been a bumper year for snow so far, but a lot of snow was washed away with recent rain and has only just been refreshed by the latest dumps...
Cheers guys. @pipeking, how do I send a pm?
Enable mail in you profile section. ;)
Thanks Doc.
Well, define winter. It once took us 4 hours to walk into whakapapiti in thigh deep powder. Best to ask a local about snow conditions that week, and take the appropriate gear for the job.
@zoneblue From Bruce Rd or Whakapapa? I walked from Desert Rd up to Rangipo in similar conditions last Nov after that big unseasonal dump. Someone had postholed it for me and it was a fairly easy.
