How many Huts have you visited?
Hey guys, just out of interest how many huts have you visited and how many years have you been tramping?
I was just thinking about it today and I use to love "Hut Bagging" but now days I dont care where or how I go, as long as I am in the hills/bush I am in my happy place and I cant wait to introduce my young ones to it properly.
I had a add up today and so far I have visited 47 huts in 4 forest parks and 2 national parks with the bulk of them in the Ruahine Forest park and my favorite hut to visit being Sunrise hut. My experience is spread out over approximately 5 years of tramping.
So anyway feel free to share your experience I would love to hear where you have been

Quick run through on Hutbagger gives 91 (started tramping 16 years ago). I might have missed a few.
Hard to say, between 100 to 150 over the years maybe more.Have visited a lot of huts more than once of course, favourites like Top Maropea,Cattle Ridge etc etc.
I looked at the map on the doc site and ran down from nth to sth counting all the huts that I can remember .... 170 or there abouts. Nothing special compared with the guys who are nearing the 900 mark!
Just done the Heaphy after about 20 years of thinking about doing it.
Brings total of DoC huts bagged to 216.
I did a trip with a hut bagger who will be nameless. He wanted to go to the hut via a gorge and contacted us for route information. I decided it would be nice to accompany him so we went in via the gorge. Then I start hearing from my friends how he's bitching because we didn't go in via the ridge so he'd have to visit this hut twice if he wanted to do the ridge route i.e. a waste of a trip to go to the same hut twice.
It's a completely different experience going in via the other route. I can't figure how someone can be disgruntled having to visit a hut twice. We joke that he races up to the hut and pees on the door frame and that's his tag. No love for the hut at all and it is an awesome hut.
lost count how many times i've revisited huts. nothing wrong with that at all. its not about how much more you've done than anyone else, its how much you get out of the experience. i'm not going to bag a hut or a peak if i dont think i'll get much out of the experience, if its going to be too much of a suffer fest or monotonous or tiring, i'll give it a miss. it gets a bit shallow if you're doing what that chap Honora describes as doing. just a notch in a belt.
Exactly Wayno. Couldn't agree more. If you're getting nothing out of it other than 'bragging rights' (to who, I'm still not quite sure), then what's the point?
Tramp for the love of it. One day you'll wake up - as many of you here have - and think, "Wow, I've actually stayed in a lot of huts".
A bonus, not the end goal. :)
Some tramp to tick the track, or to see the valley, some tramp to cross passes, traverse ranges or stand on peaks or hunt animals or photograph birds or spot a fungii or camp by a lake or to shade a hut doorway ..... no problem!
