How many Huts have you visited?
Hey guys, just out of interest how many huts have you visited and how many years have you been tramping?
I was just thinking about it today and I use to love "Hut Bagging" but now days I dont care where or how I go, as long as I am in the hills/bush I am in my happy place and I cant wait to introduce my young ones to it properly.
I had a add up today and so far I have visited 47 huts in 4 forest parks and 2 national parks with the bulk of them in the Ruahine Forest park and my favorite hut to visit being Sunrise hut. My experience is spread out over approximately 5 years of tramping.
So anyway feel free to share your experience I would love to hear where you have been
Could answer a lot easier once @matthew gets round to fixing paging on 'my experiences'. Used to be able to see how many huts i'd been to each year on this site. Now just get the list of the latest 20-or-so.
211 visited in NI. don't have a list for Si. Bit over 150 i'd say
3 huts. Jans hut, Herepai hut and Atiwhakatu Hut.
Been tramping for a year, but don't get out often.
Lost count. All of the tararua ones, while at college. except few recent replacements. quite a few elsewhere. started wandering hills 55 years ago.
Frank's been to 440. I've probably been to at least 300 huts, I'd say. I don't keep count.
Probably at least 500 unique huts on public land. There is a hut bagger site where I'm on 450 or so but but it doesn't yet list a lot of the removed or closed area huts that I visited when I worked in the hills for the NZFS in Canterbury, Southland/Fiordland and the Central NI pre 1983.
This sounds a few but a percentage of it happened because of my line of work. It's only on the West Coast of the SI and during the last 8 years that I've made a special effort to visit huts not previously visited.
Some hut baggers are reputedly up around the 800 - 900 figure for NZ huts. Paul Kilgour & Quentin Duthie are names I've heard associated with such a tally but this is just hearsay and I've not heard that from the individuals concerned. A small group of Nelsonites seem to be in to hut bagging and a guy Dion ? has visited over 500 huts. One of my mates reckons he's been to at least 350 but I know that is a considerable underestimate.
Visiting West Coast remote huts, passes & peaks are more my thing than trying to amass a huge tally of huts from all over NZ.
I met Paul Kilgour about six years ago on the Masterton train. He was heading back home after a trip through the eastern Tararuas to tick off another 8 or 10 huts. We had a great yarn. Probably he is as close to anyone getting a tally close to the full 900+ huts in the system.
A nicer bloke you could not hope to meet.
I never kept a proper list, but my count is in the 3 - 400 range, scattered all over the place. But it's taken around 48 years.
^ wow thats madness, I can't believe there was someone on here who reckoned he was gonna tick off 900 in how long?
I am not a hut bagger by any means, I think Ive maybe been to about 50? and thats in 25 years
I keep a record of huts visited and so far I am up to 67. I do a lot more bike riding than tramping or I would have visited more huts.
Oh wow that's awesome guys, I must admit I am jealous not of how many huts you folks have been tobbut just the amount of this beautiful country you have seen.
I hope in the future that I can move a bit closer to some decent hills so I can get out and about again!!
