Toka Biv

Hi, I'm looking at planning a trip to Toka Biv, Ruahines in the winter. I have tried to reach Toka before in winter, however we turned back with thigh depth snow. Any recommendations on conditions, gear (would ice axes be recommended?), or general advice would be appreciated. Cheers.
If you've had to ask all those questions, then may I suggest you do the trip in summer? It will be much more pleasant.
I was going to say a very warm sleeping bag and a hot water bottle! As you know, snow can be deep on the tops so progress could be a bit slow - but it's only a few km's. The descent and ascent would be more the danger - I'd take an ice-axe for any trip in those conditions. The descent down to Toka is quite steep and would be ok in soft snow but good fun on ice without one.
