Flying with a Tramping Pack

Hey guys and girls, I did a quick search on google and on here but couldn't find an answer. What does everyone normally do when flying with packs? For me specifically I am flying domestic (Air NZ) and need to check-in my pack as I'm tying the trip in with a business trip so will have my other clothes for the week in a carry-on. I'm thinking about protecting the pack/spraps etc while being loaded on and off the plane. I assume it would be fine to wrap it in a payer of plastic or Glad-Wrap/cling film (we have the 1m wide roll). Please feel free to expand the thread beyond my situation as a resource for others :)

You can always try one of these. As a family we have 3 of the small ones for going away in the car. I know several people who have the large one for air travel. They are much heavier duty than torpedo 7 but of course they are a lot more expensive. Made in Auckland and I think you can get repairs done if it does get smashed around. http://www.accessgear.net/products-page/bags-and-extras/holdall-large/
Um - my wife and I always travel with our tramping packs, with no problems, and what we do is:- 1. Not go through the USA, especially Los Angeles - too stressful! 2. Get all the straps and flip them over to the other, front side of the pack and do them up tightly. Tie off any loose strap ends. This makes a very compact cocoon with plenty of secure bits for the handlers to grab onto and no dangly, catchy bits. At the other end it only takes a couple of minutes to reset the straps and off you go. One advantage of using packs is that they are very easy to spot on the conveyors.
