Dumb things

Ok I'll start: Speaking of carrying beer to huts, my mates (not me, I wasn't a big drinker) would carry a box under their arm up to field hut when we were younger. I always thought it was hilarious, especially when we would encounter other hut users... pretty sure they would take cans for obvious reasons. I'm sure there are people who have carried a box higher/further?
Froze a 6-pack once. Flat beer's not worth it. Still went down.
A mate of mine actually carried his mountain bike over the Copland many years ago... Not sure if this is a dumb thing or epic?
Why?
I think he was taking a shortcut :-0
I carried a kayak up Cradle Mountain in Tasmania. The plan was to hike the Overland Track, then blow up my inflatable kayak, and paddle the length of Lake St Claire. Well, I didn't realise the season had just started, and so needed a pass (which I didn't have). The morning of the second day a ranger came to the first hut and of course, I didn't have a pass; didn't know I needed one yet. Anyway, he told me to go back the way I'd come. So I did, all the while thinking what I could do instead. So I climbed Cradle Mountain. People leave their packs at the bottom and climb, but I thought it would be a fun idea to take a boat to the top. So I did. As far as I know, it's the only boat that's been to the top. Wouldn't do it again though; that pack was HEAVY! After I descended, I blew up my kayak and paddled across Dove Lake. Oh, and I was only wearing Vibram Five Fingers. :D
In 2000, when I was in recruit school (Oz Navy), we went on an 'Exped'. Several days up Mt Buller. We were below the snow line, but only just. It was cold! However, I was toasty warm, and carrying a lot less than everyone else. Because I decided to wear what we affectionately called a 'sperm suit'. One of those white thin plasticy suits. You know, that they use for crime scenes and Breaking Bad? :D I was the laughing stock - sitting around camp in this thing, and even hiking in it. But I didn't care. I just wore shorts and a t shirt the entire time. And I was toasty warm. Didn't care about a bit of precipitation. I sweat a lot anyway. But yeah, must have looked funny seeing one bloke amongst a bunch of people mostly wearing Navy tracksuits wandering around in a sperm suit.
sperm suit? haha never heard that one before :) Phillip, Copland pass?? Thats pretty epic IMO I know some guys who biked up to Hector and back and I have seen some insane heli accessed descents out back of Wanaka, but I think that would take the cake. That was sad about that kid jumping from the crane, I know a guy who has jumped off the Kawarau Bridge in Queenstown its 43m and he broke his ankle. Same guy held the world record for the biggest cliff drop on skis it was done up Remarkables.
There used to be a bicycle on the summit of the low peak of Mt Rolleston in APNP. It was taken up in bits and then assembled though by guys from the Chch Tramping Club - Les Jones, John Visser etc. My partner witnessed someone hiffing a wheel down the Crow Neve to see what it would look like around 1972. Shame as people used to take photos of themselves sitting on the bike at the summit. I know a woman, Janet Kelland, who climbed Cho Oyo then attempted to drink a can of beer at the summit. Janet is pretty tough - she was the only one in the group who could eat her breakfast and keep it down on the morning of the climb. As someone who tramped solid in sandals for about 12 years, doing the TAT in sandals doesn't sound hard except if there was snow on any passes in which case it would be insane unless they took those 6 prong Kovea crampons or something and an ice axe.
How about the couch & BBQ on Mt Taranaki ?. http://www.stuff.co.nz/national/4556279/Mt-Taranaki-summit-cook-up-tapu-offence VDO clip worth a watch.
