seaward/inland Kaikoura conditions

I was wondering if anybody has been in Kaikoura recently and can share some information about the snow conditions at this time of year. Would I need crampons and ice axe? I have 10 days (end of Dec - beg. of Jan) to spend tramping and I would like to see as much as possible from that region including getting to the tops. From Wellington I can see some snow up on the tops especially on the inland Kaikoura, but I'm not sure if I need to take all the snow gear. thanks.
okay so I just got the topo50 maps for inland Kaikoura and I must say it won't be as easy as I expected. almost no marked tracks and not as many huts as I was hoping for...looks like my navigation skills will really be put to the test. :) so any information about other people's experiences in this area would be really appreciated. I can't wait to see the maps for seaward Kaikoura, hope they look a bit better. :) cheers
