Northern Circuit-Round the mountain combined
Hi, I was thinking of combining the Northern Circuit around Tongariro and the round the mountain track of Ruapehu.
I was wondering if anyone who has done this previously could offer any help. It would be the longest hike I have done to date, also I would be hiking alone.
I've done the circiut before and if I'm in the National Park, the chance to summit Ngauruhoe, and see the landscape of the crossing is to good to resist but I would like a new challenge, thoughts?
Sounds like a great plan. Give yourself plenty of time and enjoy yourself. You certainly won't be the only person on the Northern Circuit, the around Ruapehu trip is not so well used but the huts are good and there probably will be others there too. There are plenty of escape routes if you decide to cut the trip shorter.
On a nice day you will find plenty of others on Ngauruhoe on a nice day. It is an easy scramble (a bit of a slog actually) but a great view from the top.
As with all NZ tramping just watch out for the weather, prepare for the worst and hope for the best.
