Huts

Hi, I am considering adding flags for removed, derelict, or accommodation-prohibited huts. These huts might not appear in normal searches but you could retrieve them if you wanted. These places can be interesting to visit and often have a rich history so I think there is value in the information. Let me know any thoughts.
Here are some examples of each. Removed: http://tramper.co.nz/?6531 http://tramper.co.nz/?5529 http://tramper.co.nz/?893 Derelict: http://tramper.co.nz/?5722 http://tramper.co.nz/?6688 http://tramper.co.nz/?9037 Accommodation prohibited: http://tramper.co.nz/?9044 http://tramper.co.nz/?9032 Note that some "accommodation prohibited" huts are probably best described as shelters, e.g. Third House Shelter on Dun Mountain.
The flags sound like a good idea Matthew. I would still like such huts to appear in the normal searches because if I am trying to find information about a hut then I may not know that it is removed/derilict.
Excellent point! Cheers.
Another issue with huts is water supply. Currently, a flag indicates tank/tap water. However I think it would be useful to indicate water from stream. I could implement this by having a drop-down list of options (tank water / water from stream), with an optional note field e.g. "Water from stream 150m below the hut". Thoughts?
All good, Matthew. Hazel says the Mid-Greenstone Hut isn't removed. Some folks may be confusing it with a big new one as per the photo. Hazel says the deerstalkers charge $25 a night to stay in it.
So it is -- here's some more info. I'll update that hut. http://southernlakesnzda.org.nz/huts/
Around here some of the old huts which were fairly derelict seem to get refurbished by some keen people. The latest rumour is that the historic Tent Hut http://tramper.co.nz/?1837 is going to be done up. Others have been Riordans http://tramper.co.nz/?7345 Chaffeys http://tramper.co.nz/?1187 and Asbestos Cottage http://tramper.co.nz/?4635 Thus I think it is a good idea to keep these derelicts appear in normal searches.
Matthew - I note on the Asbestos Cottage page http://tramper.co.nz/?4635 there appears a photo of 'Chaffeys Hut' which is somewhere else entirely! It has no connection with Henry Chaffey apart from being near Chaffey's Stream. It was built after he died. I have just put a note on the Asbestos Cottage page saying all this. I would suggest that photo be removed from there as people might easily think it is Asbestos Cottage, which it isn't. Many people confuse the two and this does not help. Cheers
Hi @deepriver, Thanks for spotting the photo mistake. Indeed, huts should never be linked to photos of different huts! I've removed it. There are quite a few confusing huts -- huts that share names in different parts of the country (the two Hurunui Huts for example), huts that are either XYZ Biv or XYZ Hut and near each other, or huts with very similar names (Dynamo Hut and Dynamo Red Hut are just a few hundred metres apart). I think there is a lot of value in derelict huts -- they often have a rich history and a lot of character, and they often can be saved. Beyond that, they may also still provide life-saving shelter in a storm. At this stage, it makes sense not to remove any huts from searches.
