Upper Tauranga-Taupo River

Thanks for the reply. I doubt that there would be any fish upstream from the falls, so I would be focusing on the area just below it. Getting in seems to be fairly easy then, but can anyone be more specific on getting down to the river and a few km downstream?

The river is fairly steep sided just below the falls, as you will see from my description there is a bit of a bluff line to get down as you approach the river. I havn't really thought too much about going downstream from the falls but you definitely wouldn't be able to go down the river from the beach at the foot of the falls. I think you would have to move down stream from higher up in the bush and then see if the river is approachable further down. Fisherman do go in there. I saw one on the way out with a large trout strapped to the side of his pack one time. I have also seen lots of trout in the small stream at the foot of the falls in the spawning season. Definitely no trout upstream from the falls.
