Weather

So heres a question for you all. With the media seeming to be wrong most of the time and the met service not much better how do you forward plan your walking to take advantage of the best weather systems. I have come to rely on Ken Ring at www.predictweather.com and once in step with him have had some pretty good results. In fact Ive yet to be dissapointed.

214 pages your a laugh a minute theres a reason i walk alone and its not just my ability to mimic a d12 in full cry at night
To get back to the weather my mate ken ring predicts a rain free period around the 13th, 14th and 15th of feb in the north island so kaweka bound. i wonder how many times the met service will change its forcast between now and then
Whirinaki was next on my North Island wish list. Keen to fill in the gap and see what lies between the Kawekas & the Uruweras. Was thinking a sth-north trip Te Herapo to the Murupara road. But open to suggestions. What /when do you recommend?
To get to the Whirinaki from the Napier Taupo Rd I suggest you look at the Matakuhia Valley http://www.tramper.co.nz/?2968 There are two huts in there, there is a good track to the Upper Hut and a rough one to the Lower Hut. South from the Lower Matakuhia is a bit of an unknown and you would need to get permission to cross private land. If you do try this, let me know how you get along because it is a trip that I want to do.
Well ken got most of it right. It didnt rain during the day despite met service weather warnings. it was overcast on saturday and bloody cold on top of Kaweka but again no rain during the day and only a lite sprinkling during the night.
Hi i will be walking the Routeburn,Greenstone and Caples end of March early April what will the weather be like Lindsay
The weather will be anybody's guess. NZ weather, espacially on the west side of NZ's South island is notoriously unpredictable. But in saying that March April is probably a pretty good time. The weather is more likely to be stable then than many other times of year. But you must be prepared for anything. make sure you take a good parka, mitts, woolly hat, long johns, overtrou and fleece clothing. You will probably use them at some stage on your trip.
