Recommend a 2 day Tararua tramp?

Hi all, I'm leading a group of teens on an overnight tramp. We're based in Wellington and like are keen to fill in a weekend with a two-day tramp in the south Tararua Forest Park. I've been looking at the Mt Holdsworth to Totara Flats to Waiohine Gorge route - but recent storm damage might mean quite a rough and long trip? Perhaps Powell Hut return is good. Any advice greatly appreciated. Thanks
It sounds like you are looking for a fairly easy tramp for some inexperienced trampers. A trip to Powell Hut is a good introduction to the Tararuas, you also have the option of heading up to Mt Holdsworth or dropping down into the Atiwhakatu valley and walking out along the river. If the the weather is bad the retreat is straight back down the hill. Other options include Kime Hut or Waitaewaewae Hut from Otaki Forks - slightly more rugged and longer trips; Tutuwai Hut from Kaitoke - easy walk beside a river and nice grass flats for tenting. COne Hut a historic hut, is another 1 1/2 hr further along.
Cheers nzbazza. Hadn't even considered Tutuwai Hut. Looks good and a fairly straightforward track. Cheers for the info.
