What tent do you use

Im looking for a small, lightweight 1 0r 2 person tent to take on adventures. My spec's: up to 1.7kg, 1 or 2 person, good waterproofness, longer length (Im 6'3"), free standing?, less than $700 What kind/brand/type of tent do you carry, if you in fact carry one, I am looking for some suggestions based on your own experience. Cheers

It's a 2-skin 3-season tent. $200 (minus discount ) from R & R Sport. Plenty of length, handy vestibule & roomy enough to sit up in. Dome tents would handle extreme weather better.
With an NZ$700 budget, you should be able to buy a tent that carries itself ! I’ve just ordered a Scarp 1 (Tarptent) – a mate also has one so I know what I’m getting. Quite a lot of space for a 1P 4-season tent and weighs 1.4kg, floor length 218cm = 8'2" US$315 plus postage – it will be used for solo trips in colder weather. It’s tent #3 for me. I also have a Wilderness Equipment 1st Arrow for expedition-type use (2+P 3.3kg) and an MSR HubbaHubba for better weather (ie not SI or Tasmania) at 2.2kg – it’s free-standing, lots of space and good in average to warm weather. The Scarp is worth a look. http://tarptent.com/scarp1.html
Ive got a couple of tents/shelters already, but Im looking for something lighter and with the ability to potential store gear/cook in a vestibule. My tarp is good for both, but I need a light tent for some tops trips I have planned, the kind of place where a tarp is problematic. I like the Mono but was told it is short for us tall people, I will check out the Scarp but welcome any other suggestions.
I imported one of these from the States (via Amazon) : http://www.sierradesigns.com/p-291-lightning-ht-2.aspx Slightly outside your weight limit, but I like a bit of room (mostly use it for solo trips) and can vouch for their waterproofness - spent 12 hours in a huge downpour with big westerlies recently and not a drop made it inside.
I just bought myself a 1-person tent called "hilleberg akto" It's a 1,5 kilo 1 person tent, 4-season and about €400-€500 I have no clue what price they will go for in NZ, due to shipping rights? I've used this one before, borrowed it from a friend. It was a really good tent, with good ventilation options (though you will get some moisture inside anyways), easy set-up, enough space for your backpack and for cooking. It performs great with high speed winds, I was in Scotland (UK) with this tent and it held out in some bad winds! (not possible to walk straight) Also Hilleberg's service is great when something is damaged. Only downside to this tent, in my opinion, is the high price. But you'll get very good quality in return. Cheers!
I am still waiting for the perfect tent.... It has to weigh next to nothing, packs small, pitches almost instantly and able to withstand all but the strongest winds. While still being large enough for two people, and all this for under $400
I know what you mean, you would think in the 21st Century someone could develop a tent with all of you attributes. I mean we have shot spacecraft out of our Solar system, why cant we make a strong, light, breatheable and watertight tent. I use a hiking fly/tarp most of the time but its not good for tops trips.
I mean we have shot spacecraft out of our Solar system, why cant we make a strong, light, breatheable and watertight tent. They can. They also know it will be so expensive that noone will buy it. Think a kevlar/polyethylene material similar to look at to a standard blue polytarp but greyish colour and strong enough that you could tie up the 4 corners only and drive a bus over it. Its much the same stuff they used on the sail wings on the Americas cup boats. Wonder if there is any spare offcuts going cheap?
theres nothing to day they cant but the higher the tech tends to mean the higher the price till it prices itself out of the market.. look at cuben fibre, super light, super expensive... kevlar is expensive if you put much kevlar into material you're into serious money..
