Travel Insurance

Does anyone know of a good NZ Travel insurance (reasonaly pirced) which will insure for high altitude treking (in Nepal) - inclusive of 'helicopter' medical and search rescue. tks.
The new Zealand Alpine Club has insurance for this type of trip but you either need to be a member or pay an additional fee. I think it would classify as good insurance but I don't know if it is reasonably priced or not. http://alpineclub.org.nz/climb/insurance
As long as you are not using ropes at any stage I think most insurers will cover you for trekking. Just need to be specific about what youa re doing when you make an enquiry. As soon as rope work comes into the picture though most travel insurance deems you too high a risk.
I think you need to read the fine print. Most companies cover if you will be under 2000m but after that they stop covering you. There's a few ones that do specific ones for altitude and higher risk ones. You can google rock climbing ones and normally they cover what you need. Search through a few rock climbing forums and you might be able to find something useful. from memory i think onecover do one http://www.australiangeographic.com.au/outdoor/guide-to-insurance-for-adventure-travel.htm other than the NZ alpine club i think you might be struggling

Im actually off to nepal on monday and got comprehensive insurance for the month im there from Southern Cross for around $130.
Just getting a quote from the guy who gives discount to FMC members for a trip going to just under 6500m and using ropes (in Nepal). If that looks comparable in terms and cheaper in price than the NZAC I'll let you know.
Surprised to hear that you might lose cover above 2000m, I caught a Gondola to higher then that while in Italy and there was people living there. Plus the gondola up Klein Matterhorn in Switzerland is nearly 4000m and is a popular tourist attraction.

Yeah - that's a surprise. I paid for overseas travel insurance for all of my 2 years in Peru (I guess I never read the fine print), and probably only spent 10 days of that time below 2000m! There's suburbs of Lima higher than that - and Lima's a coastal port town!
I have had travel insurance from standard travel insurance companies when trekking at altitude, including up to just below 7000m. However, nothing has ever gone wrong for me so I have never had to try and make a claim. I have always clearly stated what I was planing to do and they were willing to cover me as long as "no assistance by way of ice axes, ropes, belays & similar comes to bear". Turns out the guy who gives the FMC discount can not get cover for the use of the above either but he may still be a good contact for standard trekking insurance if you are an FMC member - check their website for contact details. http://www.fmc.org.nz/discount-card/
