Copland pass in November?

1–10 of 11

Hi all. What are the pros and cons of doing this route then instead of later in summer? I would think maybe less problems with crevasses but prob more avalanche risk? Is this a good time, what are your thoughts? For those that have done the route since all the slips any advice? What sort of time frame were you taking to do it? With just a careful party of two, we should be alright without helmets? Thanks Kevin

Fitzgerald Pass, just south of Copland Pass is an option taken by many now.

Thanks waynowski. Fitzgerald pass does sound more sensible but we have our hearts set on Copland. Cheersfor the links, I had seen that route and map a while ago bot hadn't come across it again in my recent searching. Any good stories or perspectives from those who have been before?
the glaciers are melting leaving a lot of very loose boulders on the climb, to the point that it is becoming dangerous. you dont want to be standing directly below someone on the climb, theres a real risk they will dislodge a boulder onto another person
Yeah with a big group I wouldn't consider not taking a helmet but with just two of us I thought the risk might be easier to manage.
I've been up the Copland a couple of times by myself and would strongly recommend taking a helmet. I almost got caned walking up beside the lake and then again accessing the foot of the Copland ridge. That was in 2004 so no doubt things have changed access wise since then. Enjoy yourself-in my humble opinion it's one of the best trips we have.
Thanks kuotadriver, after your comments and after speaking to someone else the other day, I've changed my mind and will take a helmet. I will take a rope but hopeing it wont be needed. Did you have to use one? what time of year were you up there?
