Sabine Traverse in Winter

Hey Folks, I'm from Wellington and have 7 days off end of July to August and thought I might do the Sabine in winter. Now a few colleagues mentioned that I would need snowshoes!? I have done a few winter tracks in the N. Island and happy to use my ice axe and crampons, but do I need snowshoes for the S. Island? What kind of snowshoes are recommended for New Zealand conditions and where can I get any? Anyone out there with snowshoe experience? Any help is greatly appreciated!
Would they be suitable for NZ? http://www.trademe.co.nz/sports/ski-board/other/auction-485973903.htm
