Milford Track mid-August?
First question is how easy is the Milford Track to complete in mid-August? I have a lot of experience in hiking but won't have the avalanche equpiment and radios recommended. Is there somewhere you can hire these from?
Ideally I wanted to come to NZ over the peak season in order to walk the track but circumstances have prevented me and it looks like I'll be coming from around 7th-22nd August with no plans set yet.
Would anyone be interested in joining me during the dates mentioned? Any other advice would be more than welcome! Thanks. Tam.
all depends what the snowfall has been like then, if there have been recent big dumps then it is risky to go, hard to know exactly what it will be like. i wouldnt bet money on it bing safe then. there will have been a reasonable amount of snow by then just depends how the winter pans out.
Thinking about part of Milford track in mid-July. Start from Sandfly point, then to Dumpling hut, next day - to Sutherland falls and back to the hut. Third day - back to Sandfly point.
Is it real to do that or too dangerous in winter?
again all depends on the snowfall. there has been a massive dump recently and if we keep getting them like this the avalanche danger could be high.

heavy rain can also make the track impassable... as the valley tracks are on the river flood plain...
