Alcohol stoves

Since the weather is looking bad this weekend I am going to build another six stoves that will make ten for the week. Too much spare time I think...

Would that mineral fibre be our old friend asbestos. Just wonderin'...and would batts do the trick?
Honora, I'd doubt that asbestos would be used these days. Upon inspecting my fireplace it could be glass fibre. I've used pink batts in a Cat Stove before with no problems. Some of the more exotic wick materials used are zirconium oxide fibre or carbon felt. Where/if you can get them in NZ I don't know. The link below shows an interesting alcohol stove using a metal gum or lolly tin and a large wick block. http://www.backpackinglight.com/cgi-bin/backpackinglight/forums/thread_display.html?forum_thread_id=52018
it will be fine fibreglass.
Stainless steel swarf or scouring pads work well too, to pre heat the fuel. I often blend the methanol and meths together. Great source of fuel is my mates still....
I found 40 proof whisky ran OK with meths in Scotty's Hut.
Whoa !. You must have been really bored to be burning precious recource as fuel ?!.
Ha Ha. It had sat there undiscovered in the hut for years, as a tawny fluid resembling urine in a fizzy drink bottle. As I have taken the pledge, I had no qualms.
If running your own still there are 3 fractions The exact proportions you would have to look up but the first fraction is mostly ethanol but has a high methanol content making it unsafe to drink but perfect for stoves (may need a second run through the still to get high enough alcohol content) Second fraction is the good stuff you keep for yourself. Third fraction is contaminated with isopropol alcohol which is only good as a cleaning solvent. Dont drink the first and last parts of a still run. They will make you go blind
Well, that's one less thing to worry about. Although alcohol does have its place when it comes to cleaning!
