South Coast Track
Have just walked the South Coast Track with 3 children and can highly recommend it to family groups. The first day from carpark to Port Craig was fairly long (6-7 hours) but the track is in fantastic condition and there is plenty fo interest along the way. The track alternates between walking along the beach and undulating bush walking. My children were fascinated but the multitudes of fungi growing alongside the track. They also loved the bird life (we spotted a penguin within 1/2 and hour of the car park). The secondday is a real chance to appreciate the strength of character of our forebears who milled the area in the 1920s. Most of the day is spent walking along the old tramlines, the viaducts are magnificent. The south coast is often maligned for its weather, but we had sunshine for the three days we spent int he area. As a treat for the children we caught a lift up the Wairaurahiri River with Johan from Wairaurahiri Jet. Another must do, a very exciting and entertaining ride.
