so after much thinking and people talking me out of rees dart i might go for the hollyford :)
fly in, don't fly out if you're not walking both directions flying depends on the weather. you can be stuck for days waiting for the plane to come in, better to wait before you fly to the track....
should i then fly to the northern end of the track and walk it in reverse of the suggested direction in the lonly planet? do you know the flight costs and where it goes from?
you fly from the coastal end in the north the plane is around $500 from milford sound, try and book when theres a spare seat going on someone elses flight and you'll cut the costs. not sure how many seats it is, four or six seater so the actaul price could vary quite a bit. some people avoid the flight and walk it both ways.
The Hollyford is a great track. Another option from flying in would be to flick the Hollyford Guided walks an email and ask them if they will have any jetboats running on Lake McKerrow when you are planning to walk it. It takes 3 days to walk the Hollyford one way (there are 5 huts along its length but you dont need to stay in 2 of them), so utilising the jetboat would let you do the whole track in 4 days. A more intersting option would be to add on the Pyke route to form a bubbleblower shaped loop, but that would make an 8 day trip and the Pyke is not maintained by DoC so is rough as guts.
sounds interesting. the pyke route :) where dose it join on ? any ideas on the jet boat costs? the $500 for the flights is a deal braker for me i might do up and back to save some cash.
Pyke route ends at big bay where there's a hut. from there it's about hslf a day walk aling the beach to martins bay hut - the last hut on the hollyford
dose anyone know any more about the jet boat? times it runs and cost?
