Using topo maps on iPad with GPS

You can install the Tiled Maps app on your iPad and put LINZ Topo50 maps in TMS format onto your iPad through iTunes then view, pan and zoom the maps with your current GPS location plotted on the map just like you're using Google Maps. The author of Tiled Maps has already made available some of the LINZ Topo50 maps in the necessary TMS format, however it's not too hard to use MapTiler to create the TMS format files. Click the link below to see a screen capture of my iPad with a bunch of Topo50 maps I processed and put on my iPad for a recent trip down to The Catlins and Fiordland: http://twitpic.com/7wepbe/full Another screen shot, showing a zoomed-in view of a map with my location plotted; also shows that it works when you're out of 3G reception (although the iPad GPS still requires that you have the device in connected mode to work): http://twitpic.com/8aon22/full
I've been using these maps on my iPhone for the past several months. I have some minor gripes - hard to zoom in, for instance - but, all-in-all it's a brilliant app. Great way to figure out where you're at after a spate of random bush bashing...
