Tongariro Crossing

Any information about the Tongariro Crossing would be appreciated. We have walked most of the well known tracks in the South Island, and will be looking at the Crossing maybe March/April 2013 as we will be touring the North island in a car for about two weeks. We have read the Lonely Planet's brief mention but would like to hear from those who have done it, or know about it. We are both mid and late sixties, but tramp well prepared. How hard is it? Is there a place (backpackers, etc) fairly close by so we could stay the night before and after? Any info will be really helpful. Cheers.
there are loads of places you can stay where shuttles take you to and from the track. just google for tongariro accomodation and shuttle march april the weather could do anything, thats your biggest problem, it;s generally settled then, but have to watch for the possibility of a strong cold wind, if the forecast is too bad then the people running the shuttles will cancel all bookings a day in advance. just as well as most people go up there totally ill prepared for bad weather. in good weather its not hard for experienced trampers. it's totally exposed to the weather though, and the weather can do anything, any time of year... you might want to consider the whole tongariro circuit if you are experienced trampers to see more of the area it takes in the best part of the crossing.. http://www.doc.govt.nz/parks-and-recreation/tracks-and-walks/central-north-island/ruapehu/tongariro-alpine-crossing/ http://www.doc.govt.nz/parks-and-recreation/tracks-and-walks/central-north-island/turangi-taupo/tongariro-northern-circuit/
Thanks waynowski. Great links and advice. Would a Feb crossing be much different to March or later in terms of predictable weather, which, of course, is totally unpredictable. More people then? Cheers.
feb will be warmer, should be hot if the sun is out. it has been a wetter than normal summer, so no bets on the forecast. http://www.metservice.com/mountain/tongariro-national-park http://www.mountain-forecast.com/peaks/Mount-Tongariro/forecasts/1968 http://www.metservice.com/rural/taumarunui
