Shelter Rock hut to Cascade Creek Campsite?

Planning to do the Dart/Rees in late December. I would love to walk from Shelter Rock hut to the campsite below the Cascade Saddle (Cascade Creek I think) in one day. This would avoid the crowds at Dart hut that time of year (week between Christmas and New Years) as well as allow us to hike up to the Cascade saddle at sunrise. We are both in our mid forties but fairly fit, I know it involves a 2000 meter elevation gain in one day, but if we take it slowly (we should have daylight until after 2100) is it possible? Or would it be better to go from the Raspberry creek side? heard that was more difficult though.
You could do that in one day, but why rush it? The scenery is stunning, and once you stop to gawk & take a few pics several times, you will be behind schedule & have to seriously hoof it just to make camp by dark. Instead, I'd camp in the tent sites near Dart Hut, or, better yet, in the gravel/boulder flats shortly before Dart's tent sites. Then you'll have a full day to mosey up to the saddle from Dart. If you're the type of hiker who prefers knocking out 15-20 mile days over gazing & snapping pics, then you'll probably want to knock it out in one day, though. Either way, watch out for the kea: http://tinyurl.com/7a3z8pp (pics 230-249 show our camp below Shelter Rock, and some of the hike from there to Dart) http://tinyurl.com/77b8ket (pics 250-264 show our camp site at the boulder/gravel flats, and our battle with the kea) However you go, it's an awesome stretch -- enjoy it!
Thanks for the info trtl, loved your pictures. I'm a 'go slow while carrying heavy camera' type of hiker. With a goal of being on the saddle for a sunrise though maybe we'll spend a night at Dart hut, then the second night at Cascade Creek and walk out to Daley's flat from the saddle. Maybe easier do you think?
Sounds like a good plan. Dart Hut can be massively overcrowded at times. The night we spent at the gravel/boulder flats (about 10-15 minute hike shy of Dart Hut), there were 20-30 people over-capacity at the hut, and they apparently slept on the floor and/or out on the deck...
