Winter Tramp - Cameron River/Valley, Cantebury

Hi! my partner and I are visiting the South Island in late July/early August and we're looking for a short epic-feeling tramp without the perils or a full-on alpine crossing...we're cool with cold and snow on the ground, but don't have any proper mountaineering skills (being from australia and all :) ) we were thinking of going up the cameron valley up to the hut and back over 2 days...any advice/cautionary wisdom? or any alternatives? my searching seems to imply that it might be tough yakka and potentially cold (like -10C?) but not overly hazardous...but that's limited to only a couple of vague blogs from up to 10 years ago! Many thanks!
