Haystack to Hurricane Hut, Matiri Range

I am in the early stages of planning a trip to the Matiri Range area. I have been looking at http://www.wtmc.org.nz/forum/read.php?5,5098,5103,quote=1 which describes the route from the Haystack to Hurricane Hut. The descent off the ridge doesn't look too pleasant on the map and I am getting too old for epics. Also this person talks about Haystack Hut, which I don't think still exists. Has anyone here doen this route? What woulds be the grid reference for the old Haystack Hut and it would be good to get some more specific details about where to head off the ridge and drop into the valley.
Hi Pmcke, Rob McKay had given me very detailed instructions and kindly lend me his GPS. He said their group, include Sally and Pieter did not make it to Hurricane Hut as well. They camped at Lake Jeanette due to over exhausted. Next day they stayed at Hurricane Hut. Then another 2 days to Stone hut with camping stop at tarn under 1398. We will make our way to Lake Matiri Hut about 7.30pm Saturday 19th March. Lucky77
I also got some detailed instructions and have loaded a track based on those into my GPS. Together we should be right. I am told Hurricane hut is a bit of an anticlimax anyway so if we don't stay there then it doesn't matter. Aparently water can be a bit hard to find in some areas too. We will see how we go, no pressure hopefully. I am actually hoping for some good photos of the bit earthquake on the Alpine Fault predicted by Ken Ring for the 20th. See you at Lake Matiri. We should be there reasonably early as we fly into Nelson at about 9am.
