GPS and LINZ maps for free on Andriod Smartphones

Hi, I just bought myself a smartphone, HTC Desire. Most Android phones come with GPS, and I have to say, it's really fun playing with it. With MyTracks I've been recording my bike rides across Christchurch. It tells me my average speed, total recording time, total moving time, elevation changes and gradients, and creates a route which I can save and view later. Im planning to take this phone with me on several hikes to see if I can successfully take free digital LINZ maps with me on my phone and use it for wayfinding. I've been looking at other forums and so far what I've got is Mobile Atlas Creator to download offline LINZ maps and then displaying them with OruxMaps. With GPS on, I can track accurately where I am on the maps (at least in Christchurch). I should also be able to download GPX tracks from this site and overlay it on my phone. It's my first new phone in 7 years! And it serves as my phone, mobile broadband, mp3 and video player, and GPS device. Pretty nice toy! Just wondering if anyone else has tried this before and had any tips and tricks for using an Android phone for GPS and wayfinding? Battery tips too?
