Clothes for NZ sun?

Today was a scorcher and I loathe wearing sunscreen. I’ve been just wearing shorts and a short sleeve top in the heat but am getting more wary of protecting myself against UV exposure. Ideally without too much sunscreen. I’ve seen “sun shirts” popular with desert hikers in the US. Basically a loose fitting top with a UPF Rating of 25+ (many standard shirts are closer to UPF 5). Obviously all the Americans have American recommendations. What are the sun conscious among us using for protection?
A hat.

Doesn’t do much for the arms :)
Do you build up a tan on the backs of your hands etc? I know some people have to cover up entirely as all they ever do is burn. They have to wear long sleeves trousers etc and sunscreen the rest. Others can get away with building a tan on arms and legs. I wear short sleeves most of the time and have enough tan to not worry about sunscreen unless Im walking open country in the same direction for hours. Remember you can lose this tan protection though and when I worked for a company that had a long long policy I had to put sunscreen on if it was sunny.
Yeah I don’t burn often and generally build a tan. But I work outside in hawkes bay, and due to tanning rather than burning, have spent a few decades rarely applying sunscreen. However from doing some research on skin cancer, it seems being a tanner rather than a burner doesn’t really make me significantly safer from the risks of skin cancer. So I’m trying to reduce the cumulative effect and long term risk of skin cancer.
You can get non-greasy lotions these days. Clothing recommndations are here : https://dermnetnz.org/topics/sun-protective-clothing/ Personally, I wear polos, with collars, instead of t-shirts. Farmers tan. https://pics.me.me/fail-blog-org-bahama-bronze-tan-on-twitter-tanline-fail-funny-51233330.png

the outdoors shops sell clothes here with UV ratings if you're worried go for a high rating.. i just avoid burning personally. cover the head and shoulders. people who work outdoors are statistically less likely to get skin cancer, people with low vitamin d levels are more prone to skin cancer.. given to get vitamin D you need to expose your skin at times during the day the experts tell you to cover up, you sort of wonder if the message has gone too far. rickets exists in NZ now, such is the amount of covering up people are doing.. studies are showing bad diet adds to the risk. good quality fat is important in your diet for skin health... fried food or commercially produced vegetable oils can be bad news. saturated fats are good for the skin bioflavonoids are natures sunscreen and may be beneficial in protecting the skin against the sun.. my uncle was an orchadist and my cousin is an orchardist in nelson, never used sunscreen, they always wore shorts and short sleeved shirts around all day. he died in old age, never had skin cancer.. cousin just turned 70.
is sun screen helping ? according to statistics, melanoma isnt declining in nz some claim the chemicals in the sunscreen are as bad for the skin as they are good. https://bpac.org.nz/2020/melanoma-part1.aspx#:~:text=New%20Zealand%20has%20one%20of,per%20100%2C000%20population%2C%20each%20year.
Yeah I’ve read the same studies that show sunscreen use can cause more problems than it can solve (at least in excessive use) by causing blood pressure problems etc + the long term exposure to absorbing everything in sunscreen to your skin. Though it seems sunscreen doesn’t interfere with vitamin D absorption. Still, I spent 10+ hrs a day outside every day so I’m still wary of over exposure, much more than I am worried about health risks due to a lack of sun exposure. I am generally more shaded while tramping than working, but I’m more likely to overheat tramping as I have a pack and am working harder. Sadly lost my lovely Tilley hat before coming back to NZ. Who makes good hats in NZ?
