Wilkin Youngs Valley Circuit - River Crossings
We are planning to tramp the Wilkin Youngs Valley Circuit in early December. Does anyone have any useful information and experience of crossing the Makarora river at the two points suggested in the guides. E.G. depth, water flow speed, tips, etc.
Many thanks

Assuming you are starting at the Young River you may have up to 4 ways to get across.
1, Hire the jetboat from Makaroa (about $25pp with 3 passengers).
2, Cross just up at the confluence, 1st time I was there it was uncrossable with over wastedeep water and swift current, 2nd time there it was knee deep and while swift easily crossable. This is very much luck-of-the-draw unfortunetly.
3, About 1km upstream from the confluence there was a nice big braid right across the river 1st time I was there. Ankle deep the whole way across. Just kerep heading up the True Left of the Makaroa from the confluence and you should find it.
4, Start up the road at the Blue Pools where there is a bridge across the Makaroa and a bridge across the Blue. This will add an extra 7km to your first day and is a pretty uninteresting walk, but its teh safest way across and the Blue Pool is pretty.
