Wangapeka Track Camping
On the Wangapeka track is camping allowed somewhere off the track and not in a hut or campsite? On the Heaphy and Wangapeka info on this site it says “Wangapeka track is significantly more difficult than the Heaphy. As one of New Zealand's Great Walks, there are certain regulations in place. Camping is allowed only in the vicinity of each hut and at other designated campsites”
Ask DoC directly. They're friendly enough.

Heaphy is a Great Walk, but Wangapeka is not so the camping restrictions don't apply
Just to be explicit, there are no camping restrictions along the Wangapeka Track - you can camp anywhere - including at the huts. However, preferably use the toilets or make sure you're out of any flood zones and dig a decent hole (15+cm).
Have you downloaded DOC's Wangapeka Track brochure? and have a look at the 'poo in a loo' information on the DOC website.
A few hundred yards west of Cecil Kings hut, across the river ,is a good sized clearing, visible from the track.I`ve camped there, plenty of options.
